DR MARISSE VENTER
DR MARISSE VENTER
My Name is Marisse Venter I am a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. I am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as both a Medical Practioner and a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. I am a member of the South African Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, The South African Association of Aesthetic Surgeons and the International Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS).
I qualified from the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa in 2002. I did my internship at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa.
Although not a Mildent, I did a year of community service in the South African Defence Force. By qualification I was automatically a Major in the army. We served at Area Military Health Unit Potchefstroom and Military Base 10 Sai Bn Mafikeng, North West Province, South Africa.
It was during this year of military training that I was exposed to group of individuals I greatly admire. The South African Defence Force consist of women and men that have dedicated their lives to the protection of our country and its citizens. The level of discipline amongst these individuals are unparalleled to anything I have ever seen. It is here where I saw how we are trained to serve our country.
In 2005 I joined the surgical rotation at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. During my 4 years in general surgery we rotated though Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Gauteng, South Africa. By international standards Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital was classified as a level 3 war zone at the time I was training. The expertise gained and the number of operations I was able to perform as a Senior Registrar in the Trauma and surgical department were astronomical.
My surgical rotation saw the start of the breast cancer pandemic. It was during this time that I saw hundreds of women having mastectomies with no reconstruction. The “one-side-flat-chest” that these women were left behind with was heart breaking. Something needed to be done, I and started my training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. After yet another 4 years of training I qualified as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa in 2012.
I joined the Breast Care Centre of Excellence under the direction of Professor Carol-Ann Benn after a period as acting head of the Helen Joseph Plastic Surgery Department.
In the management of a breast cancer patients the reconstruction part, plays a very small part of the financial contribution from the medical insurance. Yet the presence or absence of a reconstruction determines the dignity by with a women will live or die. I realised the importance of utilising the amount of the insurance left behind for reconstruction after the cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiation in the most cost effective way. It is of paramount importance to do a near perfect reconstruction in a single procedure so that the patient may return to normal life. The amount of trauma, psychological and financial implications are such that mistakes must be avoided at all costs. The aim is to do as few operations as possible to allow the patient to return to normal life.
As part of my practice I have many male and female patients involved in beauty pageants, television, media and the international federation of bodybuilding and fitness. Initially I started a male program helping patients with gynaecomastia correction and surgical anatomical refining of muscle groups. In ladies we are able to manage the inevitable masculinisation associated with female training improving their competitiveness. I work with a multidisciplinary team involving weight loss, personal training, pageant preparation, photographic training and appearances enhancement and aesthetic fitness training. The experience gained during my time as a Miss South Africa Western Cape Finalist proves invaluable in directing these young professionals
I have dedicated my life to helping people, either by managing difficult wounds, reconstruction after breast cancer or general beautifying all in the most cost effective manner so important in the current economic climate.
As a basic human right, a person should not be allowed be unhappy with the way they look. There are many uncontrollable stresses in life. Physical appearance have been scientifically shown to determine economic viability and physiological wellbeing. I am here to help and direct you.
